Negril Area Environmental Protection Trust (NEPT)
NEPT was formed in 1994 by organizations and citizens of the Negril and Green Island watersheds, following a meeting to consider land-based sources of pollution affecting the marine and coastal ecosystems. The organization was mandated to lobby for declaration of a protected area, and to develop a plan for the environmental management of this protected area. NEPT’s mission according to its Strategic Plan 2000 – 2004, is to serve the Negril Environmental Protection Area in order to achieve a better quality of life for present and future generations, by preserving, protecting, conserving and restoring the environment through planning, coordinating and implementing environmental activities that serve as examples for others to follow. NEPT’s programmes are based on its six strategic goals: Environmental Education/Communication, Sustainable Community Development, Protected Area Management, Lobbying and Financial Independence/Sustainability.
